For August, it's been pleasantly cool in Barcelona — great if you're exploring the city with us on our social programme in the afternoon after class!

  • Tuesday 11th |  Today's trip takes us into the barrio of Poble Nou, which is home to the iconic Torre Agbar, the nightclub Razzmatazz and some of Barcelona's best street art (see photo, above). But come along with us and discover a whole lot more about one of the city's most interesting, most genuine barrios (16.00).
  • Wednesday 12th | Our walk this afternoon takes us to visit the lovely Parque de la Ciudadela. We'll also be going to the Eiffel-Tower-inspired Estación de Francia. If you're interested in architecture, and the history of Barcelona, there are some fascinating things to see on today's trip (16.00).
  • Thursday 13th | One you just must see: the best known Gaudí building in Barcelona, the still unfinished Sagrada Familia, though it's now getting much closer to completion. If you want to go inside, note that it costs a minimum €15 (!!) and best book tickets online but it's definitely not something to be missed (16.00).
  • Friday 14th | We've got a tongue twisters contest at this week's Friday Club language exchange. That would be trabalenguas in Spanish if you want to warm up for that! In the bar/on the terrace, 19.00-21.00.

Join us in Spanish Reception (C floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

Also this week | European Supercup Final, Barça vs Sevilla (Tuesday, kick-off 20.45). The game is in Tiblisi so you might want to check out these bars in Barcelona with big screens.

Starting Saturday | Probably Barcelona's best barrio fiesta, the Festa Major de Gràcia | Full programme (in Catalan)

Churches, Picasso's Barcelona, magic fountains… this week's social programme

Exploring Barcelona

Party in Barcelona Saturday night as Barça celebrate the double with a Cup Final played at home ("Spain is different!" they say) over a team that finished 6 places or 39 points below them in the League.

Before that, we've lots more on our social programme for you…

  • Tuesday 26th | Everyone who comes to Barcelona goes to see the Sagrada Familia but the city has a number of other lovely churches. Come with us today to see the Joyas del Gótico, the "Gothic jewels" of Barcelona — the Cathedral and the wonderful churches of Santa María del Pí and Santa María del Mar (16.00).
  • Wednesday 27th | Our walk this afternoon takes us to see some of Picasso's Barcelona: it includes some of the most picturesque of the streets of the Barrio Gótico (Petrixol, Avinyó…);  places like the 4 Gats restaurant (a bohemian taberna in Picasso's time); the Estación de Francia (from where he first travelled to Paris at the age of 21); and the Carrer de Montcada, where the Museo Picasso now stands (16.00).
  • Thursday 28th | Note the change from the usual time today: this evening we're going to the spectacular light and sound show of the Magic Fountains of Montjuic (20.00).
  • Friday 29th | Join us in the bar/on the terrace this evening for the fun and games at this week's Friday Club language exchange (19.00-21.00).

Join us in Spanish Reception (C floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

Also this week | Final of the Copa del Rey, Barça vs Athletic Bilbao (Saturday, kick-off 21.30).

We do take you to the usual places, like the Sagrada Familia for example, on our social programme but we like to get to places a bit further off the beaten track, too. Shirt sleeves, sunglasses, comfortable shoes and a camera will be in order this week!

  • Tuesday 19th |  Today's trip takes us into the barrio of Poble Nou, which is home to the iconic Torre Agbar, the nightclub Razzmatazz and some of Barcelona's best street art. But come along with us and discover a whole lot more about one of the city's most interesting, most genuine barrios (16.00).
  • Wednesday 20th | This afternoon we'll be visiting the Parlament de Catalunya. Ironically housed in what was originally the arsenal of the fortress built to dominate the city after the 1713-14 siege, the building itself is lovely, the visit an interesting one also to discover how the Parlament works. The trip also takes us into the Parque de la Ciudadela, one of Barcelona's nicest parks (16.00).
  • Tuesday 21st | The barrio of Barceloneta was built on reclaimed land and dates back only to the 18th century but — once — housed Barcelona's fishermen and then factories. Both are now long gone and have been replaced by a lot of noisy tourists, but the district still retains a peculiar, original flavour. Come with us and see for yourself (16.00).
  • Friday 22nd | This week, it's Flower Power Friday at our Friday Club language exchange. Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair… | sing it 😉 ! In the bar/on the terrace, 19.00-21.00.

Join us in Spanish Reception (C floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

Also this week | Newly crowned champions Barça vs Deportivo La Coruña in the last La Liga game of the season (Saturday, kick-off 18.30).

Come and explore Barcelona with us on the social programme. It's a great way to see more of the city….

  • Tuesday 10th | Join us on our walk today round the popular barrio of El Born, full of cool bars and history, home to the lovely church of Santa Maria del Mar and the Estación de Francia, which we'll also be visiting on our way to the Parque de la Ciudadela, one of Barcelona's nicest parks. Great street art, too, as you can see in the image, above (16.00)!
  • Wednesday 11th | Transformed for the 1929 Universal Exhibition, the Plaza España is within walking distance of so much: the Las Arenas shopping mall in the former bullring (great view from the top!); Miró's Dona i Ocell (no sniggering!); the outstanding art collection at the MNAC (housed in the Palacio Nacional, built for the Exhibition); the former factory, now art museum of the Caixa Forum… and lots more besides (16.00).
  • Thursday 12th | This afternoon we're taking on a walk along the Moll de la Fusta, which takes us from the wonderful Catalan History museum, across the old port past the Maremagnum shopping and leisure centre to the statue of Columbus and the bottom of the Ramblas (16.00).
  • Friday 13th | It's actually Tuesday 13th that's unlucky for Spanish people, so don't be put off coming to our Friday Club language exchange! This week we've got Bingo for you (in the bar/on the terrace, 19.00-21.00).

Join us in Spanish Reception (C floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

Also this week | Spanish League, Espanyol vs Atlético Madrid (Saturday, kick-off 16.00).

We've got a couple of really great walks for you on the social programme this week. You'll want walking shoes and a jacket (max. temp 18ºC) but the weather forecast is for sunshine until Friday.

  • Tuesday 24th | Come for a stroll around the Raval, the district on the right of the Ramblas as you head down towards the port — home to the CCCB and the MACBA and Fernando Botero's fat cat, to the protagonists of many of Barcelona's novelas negras and — as you can see in the photo, above — one of the best barrios in Barcelona for street art. Bring your camera (16.00)!
  • Wednesday 25th | Our walk this afternoon takes us to see some of Picasso's Barcelona: it includes some of the most picturesque of the streets of the Barrio Gótico (Petrixol, Avinyó…);  places like the 4 Gats restaurant (a bohemian taberna in Picasso's time); the Estación de Francia (from where he first travelled to Paris at the age of 21); and the Carrer de Montcada, where the Museo Picasso now stands (16.00).
  • Thursday 26th | Our "Barcelona y el mar" walk today takes us down to the port and the seafront, and to the barrio of Barceloneta (where they aren't too happy with noisy tourists!) for a different perspective on the city (16.00)!
  • Friday 27th | It's Taboo Cards at this week's Friday Club language exchange. Join us for the fun and games in the bar/on the terrace (19.00-21.00).

We meet up in Spanish Reception (C floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

And this week is your last chance to see the Josep Llimona exhibition at the MEAM.
