Coconut Party this week

March, and it will soon be spring in Barcelona — the perfect time for exploring the city. Come and do so with us on our social programme.

  • Tuesday 3rd | Our stroll today takes us round the Barrio Gótico, the old part of the city of Barcelona. You could and will go on your own — but come with us and you'll discover a little more.
  • Wednesday 4th | Our trip this afternoon takes us to the lovely gardens of the Palacio Real de Pedralbes, which was home to the Spanish monarchy 1919-1931 whenever they visited the city (they dare not show their faces here now 😉 !, and also takes in the remarkable Gaudí dragon on the gate of the Finca Güell, the summer home of Eusebi Güell, Gaudí's great patron (16.00).
  • Thursday 5th | Come with us for a stroll this afternoon to see something of the Ruta del Modernismo. We can't and won't (promise!) take you to see all the 116 Modernista buildings officially included in the Route, but you'll get at least a taste of Barcelona's magnificent architecture (16.00).
  • Friday 6th | We confess that we don't know what Mireia has in store for us at this week's Friday Club Coconut Party — but come along anyway, it's always fun! In the bar/on the terrace, 19-00-21.00.

Join us in Spanish Reception (C floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

Also this week | Spanish League, Barça vs Rayo Vallecano (Sunday, kick-off 12.00).

Walking and dance shoes for this week's programme

On the noticeboard: this week's Friday Club

You want your camera, probably a hat and scarf (though it's sunny), your walking shoes and — possibly! — your dance shoes if you're joining us on this week's social programme.

  • Tuesday 3rd | Our walk this afternoon takes us to the Manzana de la Discordia, the block on Passeig de Gracia with three of Barcelona's best examples of Modernista architecture — the Casa Batlló (Gaudí); the Casa Amatller (Puig i Cadafalch); and the Casa Lleó i Morera (Domènech i Montaner); as well as to the Casa Milà (also by Gaudí), which is further up the street on the other side (16.00).
  • Wednesday 4th | Come with this afternoon for a stroll down the Ramblas, to discover some of the amazing things on and just off it — including one of our favourite Barcelona dragons and the Palau Guell, one of the few Modernista buildings to be found outside the Eixample district (16.00).
  • Thursday 5th | Transformed for the 1929 Universal Exhibition, the Plaza España is within walking distance of so much: the Las Arenas shopping mall in the former bullring (great view from the top!); Miró's Dona i Ocell (no sniggering!); the outstanding art collection at the MNAC (housed in the Palacio Nacional, built for the Exhibition); the former factory, now art museum of the Caixa Forum… and lots more besides (16.00).
  • Friday 7th | We've not quite sure what the Momento Latino (see image, above) at this week's Friday Club language exchange will involve — but just in case it involves any Latin dance or music (or trivia questions!), here's a link to clue you up on the subject. In the bar/on the terrace, 19.00-21.00.

Join us in Spanish Reception (C floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

Also this week We have our annual IH Barcelona ELT Conference this weekend, for English teachers, with an excellent lineup of speakers. For Spanish teachers, see Encuentro Práctico.

Last chance The outstanding Sebastião Salgado exhibition, Génesis, closes at the CaixaForum, February 8. If you're coming with us on Thursday, go see it!

Social programme for Christmas in Barcelona

Santa Llucia

With it being Christmas on Thursday, it's just a three-day week this week — but we still have a social programme for you as usual:

  • Monday 22nd | One of our Christmas traditions in Barcelona is to buy figures to create a Nativity scene at the Santa Llúcia Christmas fair (photo above), which has been held for the last 225 plus years [website]). Come along with us this afternoon to see, and to discover some of our other traditions (16.00).
  • Tuesday 23rd | Our trip this afternoon takes us into the bohemian district of Gracia [general information | map]: interesting history, lovely architecture, great bars — and the handcraft fair that is on is possibly also a good place to buy some last-minute Christmas gifts (16.00).
  • Wednesday 24th | Come with us this afternoon to the Sagrada Familia, not to see inside but to visit the Christmas fair right outside. Need to do some shopping for presents but not just the usual souvenirs? This is your place (16.00)!

Holidays dates and courses
Note that there's no Friday Club until January 9th and that the school is closed from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th December, inclusive.

Apart from that, however, we're still open for classes and it's not too late to take advantage of our 3×2 offer on our intensive Spanish courses.

Mafia Night at this week's Friday Club

The social program for you if you're taking an intensive Spanish course in Barcelona with us. It brings you lots of extra practice for your Spanish and, just as importantly, a lot of fun…

  • Tuesday 18th | Join us on our walk today round the  popular barrio of El Born, full of cool bars and history, home to the lovely church of Santa Maria del Mar and the Estación de Francia, which we'll also be visiting on our way to the Parque de la Ciudadela, one of Barcelona's nicest parks (16.00).
  • Wednesday 19th | Our trip this afternoon takes us to the lovely gardens of the Palacio Real de Pedralbes, which was home to the Spanish monarchy 1919-1931 whenever they visited the city, and also takes in the remarkable Gaudí dragon (photo, above) on the gate of the Finca Güell, the summer home of Eusebi Güell, Gaudí's great patron (16.00).
  • Thursday 20th | Everyone who comes to Barcelona goes to see the Sagrada Familia but the city has a number of other lovely churches. Come with us today to see the Joyas del Gótico, the "Gothic jewels" of Barcelona — the Cathedral and the wonderful churches of Santa María del Pí and Santa María del Mar (NB 16.30).
  • Friday 21st | We've got a Mafia Night at this week's Friday Club language exchange. We're not sure, but suspect that might involve this popular Mafia game but come along anyway, Friday Club is always fun. In the bar/on the terrace, 19.00-21.00.

Join us in Spanish Reception (C Floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.

Also this week Barça vs Seville (Spanish league), Saturday 22nd, kick-off 20.00.

Come and see Barcelona's amazing architecture

El Quadrat d'Or (1990) por manuelhuerga

The wonderful video above shows you what the Quadrat d'Or looked like in 1900 (with no cars!), at the time Barcelona's Eixample district was just acquiring its amazing Modernista architecture. Come along with us on our social program Thursday to see it for yourself…

  • Tuesday 4th | Our "Barcelona y el mar" walk today takes us down to the port and the seafront, and to the barrio of Barceloneta (where they aren't too happy with noisy tourists!) for a different perspective on the city. Bring an umbrella — rain is forecast (16.00)!
  • Wednesday 5th | Come with us today to see one of the districts of Barcelona that modern architecture (and the bulldozers!) have transformed, the area between Glorias and the Forum, and see one of the city's most distinctive landmarks, the Torre Agbar [photos, here and here] (16.00).
  • Thursday 6th | Our stroll this afternoon takes you to see something of the Ruta del Modernismo. We can't and won't (promise!) take you to see all the 116 buildings officially included in the Route, but you'll get at least a taste of Barcelona's magnificent Modernista architecture. It's also an amazing contrast to what you will see with us on Wednesday (16.00).
  • Friday 7th | Whether your idea of superheroes is Capitán América or Mortadelo y Filemón, we think you'll enjoy our "Superheroes Night" at this week's Friday Club language exchange. In the bar/on the terrace, 19.00-21.00.

Join us in Spanish Reception (C Floor), unless otherwise stated, at the times given above.
