Façade, Casa Vicens | Photo: Tom Walton
For anyone that comes to Barcelona and falls in love with the Gaudí buildings (and that is immensely rich, we should add) one of the less well-known ones, the Casa Vicens (Carolines 24 [map]) is still for sale.
Gaudí's first major work, it was built between 1883 and 1888 as a summer house for a local tile manufacturer Manuel Vicens i Montaner, at a time when there were still open spaces in that area of the city.
The Casa Vicens is not quite as unique as later works like the Casa Batlló (1904-06) and the Casa Milà (1906-1910), with its main distinguishing features perhaps the tiles that decorate the façade and the ironwork fencing that surrounds its once much more extensive garden.
