The church of Santa María del Mar (Plaza Santa Maria [map]) is documented back to 998, though the present church (partly destroyed by fire in 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War) is later, being fourteenth century and one of the finest existing examples of Catalan Gothic architecture.

We went to visit it on our social program this week, when we also went to the Cathedral and the church of Santa María del Pí, Barcelona's other two "Joyas del Gótico".

Santa María del Mar is also a contender for our Seven Wonders of Barcelona. You'd like to vote, our poll is still open…
