Standing to one side of the front of the Cathedral, at Santa Llúcia 1 [map], the Casa de l'Ardiaca (the Archdeacon's house) backs on to the remains of the Roman wall of Barcelona [>> further details].

Much rebuilt since its 12th century origins, it was renovated in the late 19th century for the School of Lawyers with the addition of a marble letterbox (above), one of the lesser works of architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner, whose Hospital de Sant Pau we posted a picture of earlier this week.

According to TimeOut's excellent Barcelona guide, the swifts and the tortoise you can see above "may have been a reflection on the speed of the postal service as opposed to the expectations of its customers"!
