Castellers, Plaza Sant Jaume | Photo: Tom Walton
Sunday 21st and Wednesday 24th, at 12.00 in the Plaza Sant Jaume [map], as part of the Mercè, Barcelona's festa major, there are castellers, spectacular human towers which are a Catalan tradition, said to date back to at least the 18th century, and which can rise to ten levels.
The collective effort required to get the castell successfully up and then safely dismantled is quite something. Even just watching, and applauding afterwards — whether or not it's been successful — you can't helping feeling that you too participated, willing them on.
Don't miss it if you are here in Barcelona…
