Prezi the end of the world

Posted on | December 21, 2012 | 4 Comments

Here's a topical — and pretty cool — Prezi for today.

I'm a big fan of Prezi and your learners can do some fun things with it. It's a neat way to present project work but I have my doubts as to whether or not it's in fact that much of an improvement over PowerPoint if it's being used as a formal presentation tool before an audience.

Perhaps it's just that there are bad Prezi's in that context, just as there are bad PowerPoints. But look for example, in this case, about how much information there is on some of the "slides" here. That would be bad in PowerPoint, and in Prezi poor design does not suddenly get better.

Absolutely agree – not a big fan of Prezi; the built in sea-sickness feature doesn't seem a great leap forward from death by Powerpoint. The real problem is not the software, but people's failure to understand the role of graphics in an oral presentation.

Still, to be fair, the strapline of this prezi is "Everything you need to know about the Mayan apocalypse" – clearly we need to know an awful lot more than just the fact that the world didn't end (which we know anyway, so don't need a presentation).

Thanks Pete. You're right: the "Everything you need to know" needs to be kept in mind.

It's getting round to our ELT Conference time and I always have the same doubt as I start planning my talk: "PowerPoint or Prezi?" (though I do also give consideration to a few others).

I almost invariably fall back on PowerPoint as I can't quite see that Prezi is actually going to help me get my points across better…

To avoid the seasickness that comes from zooming about too much, it's absolutely vital to plan your Prezi out carefully (best is an old-fashioned piece of paper!) and ensure that you "jump" the minimum possible distance.

The worst Prezi's I see are those where that has not happened.

Well, as a marketing opportunity, you could also hand out Dramamine tablets in nice little boxes as an alternative to a business card – but probably it would break quite a few health and safety regulations :-)
